Csaba Sógor's campaign-2009
Hungarian community in Szatmár County remain united.
"United, cohesive communities live here in the county of Szatmár
[Judeţul Satu Mare, Romania] who believe in the power of solidarity,
and on 7 June we will once again show this strength." These were the
words that greeted European parliamentary candidate Csaba Sógor on his
visit to Mikola [Micula]. Residents of the village, renowned for its
potato and strawberry crops, asked the candidate what he thought was at
stake in the forthcoming EU parliamentary elections. Sógor explained
that this is the first time in 90 years of Hungarian history that
virtually all Hungarians living in the Carpathian Basin will once again
vote together, on 7 June. "Unfortunately, for the time being the
Hungarians of Vojvodina [in Serbia] and the Kárpátalja region [in
Ukraine] will be left out, but we must make our presence felt in the
European Parliament on their behalf, too, and must represent their
interests," he said.
On Monday morning the campaign bus toured the streets of Lázári [Lazuri], Sándorhomok [Nisipeni], Szárazberek [Bercu] and Mikola. For the whole day Sógor was accompanied by István D. Erdei, member of parliament for the county of Szatmár. At every village those who gathered were informed that the united list of candidates of "Hungarian Solidarity" (Magyar Összefogás) is, in legal terms, the candidate list of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), with the tulip as its election symbol. Erdei noted that the tick-box for the party is positioned in second place on voting slips.
Sógor's campaign bus was set to continue to tour the villages of Szatmár County on Monday afternoon and all day Tuesday.
