The President of the European Parliament needs to mediate between Slovakia and the European Union.

Jerzy Buzek, the newly appointed President of The European Parliament (EP) said in his inauguration speech that he believes that his appointment is realization of the dream of reuniting the continent. The new President promised to be the ambassador of the member states in order to achieve a modern, strong, unified Europe.

In relation to the President’s speech Mr. Sógor Csaba, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) made reference to the situation created by the coming into force of the Slovakian State Language Law and pointed out that the President of the EP needs to mediate between Slovakia and the European Union (EU), not between Slovakia and Hungary. – They are making a mockery of fundamental European values, they disregard signed and ratified treaties – said the MEP from Transylvania.

Sógor Csaba called upon his fellow MEPs to remember that the Hungarian community has been devided between ten countries - We need to be greatfull to the EU because seven of these countries are between its borders, so the

Hungarians are reunited again, living in a space between borders.

The MEP reminded that the Hungarian living in Ukraine suffer the most because of the state language being forcefully imposed. – Transylvania, Szekler Land, my home is in a similar situation. It is important to have a Commissioner dealing with the issues of national minorities, but it is also neccessary for the European values and collective rights of the minorities to be put into everyday practice.
