Brussels gave home to the First European Innovation Summit held this week, where the European Parliament (EP) hosted the two-day event.

The Members of the European Parliament (MEP), including many Hungarian MEPs, took part in the works of the conference and recognized the crucial importance of innovation in the modern world.

Today’s panels and workgroups focused on implementation and tried to find answers to the most effective ways this can be achieved. Mr. Sógor Csaba, MEP made reference in his speech to the financial crisis saying that it affects the whole Hungarian community in Eastern Europe and stressed the importance of solidarity in these trying times.

- To overcome the crisis we need to aid each other in every way possible, a process we’ve come to get used to in the last century. Unfortunately we’re experiencing a deep crisis of all three major resources: human, financial and energetic. We expect the revitalize these fields through the success of the cooperation projects between Hungary, The Czech Republic and Romania. The Hungarian presidency in 2011 is a great opportunity to broaden this cooperation. Under these circumstances the role of the Hungarian Patent Office will be even greater because the protection of intellectual rights will constitute an ever growing challenge.

The MEP also pointed out the importance of innovational coaching activities in the region. Mr. Sógor Csaba gave the example of the Sapientia University which has been the beneficiary of such coaching and cross-border projects and can now play its part as the maintainer and developer of the region’s intellectual potential.
