We need to put the Hungarian issue on the political agenda

This year's Jósika Miklós commemoration ceremony was held in Bruxelles with the attendace of Sógor Csaba and Tőkés László, members of the European Parliament.

The former home of the writer and politican was the venue for the event that was unique due to the atmosphere of the commemoration of 160 years since the Hungarian revolution of 1848-48 and the special programme prepared by the guests: the three schools baring Jósika’s name portrayed the work of the author through texts selected by their teachers. All three schools – from Etéd, Napkor and Torda – commemorated events from the writer’s life relating to their cities.

The guests were welcomed by Mr. Sógor Csaba, MEP:

„In a few days, on November 1st it will be 150 years since baron Jósika Miklós set up a central representation office for the emigrants of the Hungarian revolution right here, in Bruxelles, in this house. His aim was to keep all the major newspapers informed about the Hungarian freedom movement and keep interests high regarding the issue. Unfortunately he had to cease his activities in 1861 due the lack of funding.

It is an honor for us, elected representatives of the Hungarian community in Transylvania, to continue representing the Hungarian issue here, in the heart of Europe. Because we still have many things to fight for, even after 150 years: the rights of our fellow Hungarian living in minority status, our rights to self governance, our right to free usage of our mother tongue.

We pay our tribute to the literary and political work of Jósika Miklós, as well as to his civic undertakings. We must point out that the Hungarians living in Bruxelles took up his legacy and continued his work voluntarily even before Hungary joined the European Union. We thank you for this!”
