Sógor Csaba on the fight against corruption in Romania: the abuses ought also be seen by Europe
We cannot stand by and act like we can’t see the abuses of power in the fight against corruption in Romania – stated Sógor Csaba on Monday evening at the plenary session of the European Parliament. The Hungarian MEP from Transylvania showed the example of the Catholic School in Târgu-Mureș - the legality of establishment of which was recently questioned - saying that though the European public opinion often considers Romania’s actions against corruption as exemplary it ought to also see the abuses.
Sógor Csaba stated: change is taking place in Romania, and the fight against corruption started to yield positive results. Nevertheless, he reminded his colleagues about the anti-corruption agency investigating a Hungarian catholic school functioning in a building retroceded to the catholic Church as per the provisions of the restitution laws in force, because allegedly irregularities occurred during the authorisation process.
„If there has truly been an irregularity it must be corrected by administrative means, but it is unacceptable that officials, who acted in accordance with the law are charged with corruption, and that insecurity is sown among children and their parents” – stated the RMDSZ MEP.
Sógor Csaba drew the attention of his colleagues to the fact that it is more and more common for Romania to question the lawfulness of Hungarian schools operating in buildings retroceded to churches. “The Hungarian community in Romania trusts, that this is not just a means used by some people to reverse the restitution process” – stated the MEP.
