Minority issues need an EU wide solution

The key to disentangling the situation in Ukraine is to find a solution to the minority issue, said Csaba Sógor in Râmetea, at a summer university camp organized for political science students.

At the event organised between 3 and 6 July the participants discussed topics such as self-determination, nationalism and world politics.  On Friday RMDSZ MEP Csaba Sógor spoke about the Ukrainian conflict and how it is seen in the European Parliament.

The MEP mentioned that the EP organised four discussions on this matter this year, the resolutions adopted in February calling on Russia to respect the sovereignty of its neighbours and not to consider the eastern partners of the European Union as its zone of influence. Furthermore, the resolutions stated that Ukrainians should decide the future of their own country in an autonomous manner. Later on, when Russia invaded Crimea, the EP envisaged sanctions against it and took a firm stand regarding the protection of minorities. In Csaba Sógor’s opinion the Ukrainian situation is a perfect example, which proves that minority issues need to be addressed at an EU level.

The RMDSZ MEP believes that the conflict between Ukrainians and Russians - which is far from being over - should bring nations together, and help solve minority related issues. “For instance the Romanian-Hungarian cooperation should also take a new turn, and the two nations should be able to live together more harmoniously. I believe there will be progress in this matter”, stressed Csaba Sógor.
