Children’s rights to be treated as a self-standing field in the European Parliament
A Children’s rights manifesto was presented in the European Parliament, urging MEPs to support a more efficient way of implementing regulations on children’s right protection. The action plan of the Child Rights Manifesto was drawn up by thirteen international child protection organisations.
Deeming that it is important that the EP take children’s rights aspects into consideration when drafting policies, RMDSZ MEP Csaba Sógor also supports this initiative.
At the meeting the MEPs reviewed all policy areas that need to be changed so that the institution can address child protection issues. All political factions agreed that child protection should be addressed in all committees, thus broadening the competence of the intergroup dealing with children’s rights. They also agreed that the work of the NGOs in this field is crucial and that the EP should continue to consult with them in these matters.
MEPs unanimously decided that children’s rights should be considered in the work of any specialist committee and that analysis and feedback is needed in this area. They also agreed that information is needed in order to measure the effects of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion on children’s well being.
“Due to the global crisis issues affecting children’s rights and well-being cannot be viewed as an isolated question. I agree that the EP should take children’s rights aspects into consideration when drafting any policy. The stake is high, as children’s well-being ensures the future of our society”, pointed out Csaba Sógor.
