Through a resolution adopted on Thursday, 13 March, the European Parliament called on Russia to peacefully solve the crisis from Ukraine, fully respecting principles and obligations set out in the international law. The motion, which also addresses the protection of minority rights, was also supported by MEP Csaba Sógor.

The EP resolution condemns the Russian aggression and stands by the territorial integrity, unity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. According to the document, the EU and its member states should have a common position towards Russia and support Ukraine’s right to decide its future.

„In case in the next few days there isn’t any unexpected development in the events, referring to the results of the week-end’s referendum and to the protection of Russian people, the Russian Federation will annex the Crimean Peninsula”, said Csaba Sógor at the EP’s plenary session of Strasbourg from 13 March. The MEP also stressed the need to analyse the reasons that led Russia, Ukraine and the European Union into this entanglement.

„Could the European Union have treated the situation differently?”, asked the politician from RMDSZ, according to which the European Union must consider whether the Russians from Ukraine are justified to feel discontent in this new Ukraine. Sógor also pointed out there are several other minorities, whose existence is not recognised neither by the old, nor by the new government of Ukraine.

According to Sógor, the EU must try to make the most out of the current situation from the Crimean Peninsula. The MEP also added that this situation will serve as a lesson to the European Union and that in the future it would influence the decisions in the field of national minorities.
