Meeting between students and Csaba Sógor

2014-03-14

Invited at the communication workshop organised by the Hungarian University from Transylvania – Sapientia between 11-14 March, MEP Csaba Sógor talked about the lobby in Brussels in favour of Transylvania and Szeklerland as well as about the future challenges of the European Union.

Csaba Sógor explained to the audience composed mainly of students from the Communication and Sociology departments that in order to gain supporters in the European Parliament for the Hungarian cause from Transylvania, various types of lobbies are needed. According to the MEP, beside their activities related to minority protection, Hungarian MEPs from Transylvania must also share with their colleagues from the West the values and traditions of the Hungarians from Romania.

”It is not enough to talk in Brussels about the discriminations we are facing, because this way we will be seen as a permanently complaining community”, emphasized the RMDSZ MEP, who during the last seven years organised numerous events at the Brussels and Luxembourg seats of the European Parliament, making the Western public acquainted with the history, traditions, culture and present situation of the Hungarians from Transylvania.

When questioned about what the future and employment conditions will look like for the current students, Csaba Sógor replied that the economic model of the 20th century will soon cease to function. ”The foundations of our economies must be rethought and we must re-establish the value of hard work”, declared the MEP, advising the students to learn foreign languages and make use of the educational opportunities offered by the European Union.

In Sógor’s opinion young people should travel and get to know the world and other cultures because this way they will be better positioned to serve their countries usefully. The MEP also expressed his satisfaction that beginning from last year the students of the Hungarian University from Transylvania – Sapientia also have the opportunity to take part in the Erasmus programme and gain new experiences abroad.
