RMDSZ MEPs’ common press release regarding the Hungarian revolution of 1956

2013-10-23

The revolution of 1956 demonstrates the Hungarian nation’s love for freedom and opposition to foreign oppression. For us, Hungarians living in the Carpathian Basin, it is also represents a day of solidarity and of standing up for our rights. The 23rd of October 1956 kindled hope in the Hungarians from Hungary and from abroad that communism can be defeated. Nevertheless, the following days were dark ones for the revolutionaries and for those who sympathised with them.

Since 1989 the Hungarian community in Romania lives free and fights for individual and collective rights with the instruments of a parliamentary democracy, and, since our country has joined the European Union in 2007, we have been trying to build a better future for us along with another 500 million European citizens.

RMDSZ MEP’s Iuliu Winkler and Csaba Sógor commemorate the revolution together with the Hungarian community, and honour those who sacrificed their lives in the fight for freedom of 1956.
