The social security systems of member states under review
At the meeting of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee (EMPL) of the European Parliament from 29 May DAHR MEP Csaba Sógor was appointed responsible for the own initiative report insisting on a EU-wide general and universal social insurance system. The document will be debated following the 202/2012 proposal of the ILO (The International Labour Organisation of the United Nations – www.ilo.org).
Currently only 20% of the global population has adequate social insurance. The aim of the ILO is to create social insurance networks and to strengthen existing social security systems on a global scale. Through its programmes, the organisation proposes the deepening of social protection, while taking into account the particularities of member states. Its main objective is to generalise the use of social insurance systems worldwide.
The ILO started campaigning for general social security coverage and the implementation of the minimum system exactly ten years ago. Today, there are developing countries in South America, Asia or Africa that set a good example by implementing the minimum system. Nevertheless, in spite of a decade’s work and the fact that the minimum system proved to be an efficient measure in fighting the effects of the economic and financial crisis, it is still not a worldwide practice.
