MEP Csaba Sógor held a brief lecture about the European Union at the Estelnic local town days on the 1st of July.

The MEP’s presentation had a large attendance of locals and guests from Hungary. At the event Csaba Sógor spoke about the functioning of the EU, its institutions and – at the request of the audience - the economic crisis.

In his speech Csaba Sógor pointed out that even though the economic crisis has put its mark on our everyday lives, people can still manage to earn a living here in Romania, too. The MEP also called attention to the EU funds in the field of agriculture that can help local farmers in developing their businesses. In his presentation, the MEP showed Scandinavian countries as good examples to be followed, since they are the only ones that have not been affected by the crisis.

- Romania, Transylvania and Estelnic need to learn from North-European countries, because the states, which have decentralized systems, strong civil societies and trade unions have experienced less of the economic crisis – said Sógor. The MEP added that all these things are based on a broad, free and high-level education system in which Scandinavian countries have been investing for decades: as a percentage of the GDP they spend twice as much on education than the country most affected by the crisis, Greece.

Following the presentation, the leadership of Estelnic signed a sister locality contract with the commune of Segesd from South Western Hungary. The two communes had the opportunity to sign this agreement through the funds available in the “Europe for Citizens” EU programme.

The link between Estelnic and Segesd began in 1995, their connection consisting of mutual visits and cultural events. The two mayors, Attila Varga from Estelnic and László Péntek from Segesd hold the view that sister town meetings are an excellent opportunity to learn about each other’s culture and traditions. Another benefit of such meetings is that they allow for the creation of new acquaintances and friendships.
