DAHR’s MEPs called for the intervention of the European socialist and liberal sister parties in the case of the anti-Hungarian measures of the Romanian government

DAHR’s MEPs Csaba Sógor and Gyula Winkler addressed a joint letter to socialist and liberal group leaders Hannes Swoboda and Guy Verhofstadt.

The Hungarian MEPs from Transylvania called the group leaders’ attention to the new Romanian governing coalition’s anti-minority and anti-Hungarian measures and urged them to raise the issue with their Romanian sister parties.

DAHR’s politicians asked for Mr. Swoboda’s and Mr. Verhofstadt’s intervention in the case of the Medical and Pharmaceutical University of Tirgu Mures, the new Romanian election law and the intention to redefine the country’s development regions.

According to their arguments, it is the responsibility of the group leaders to take action: the coalition of their sister parties cannot revoke existing rights. The rule of law and the respect of democratic values are primary. There cannot be a double standard, it is not enough to only speak about European values: the new coalition’s parties cannot enact measures that are discriminatory and go against minority rights and the principles of parliamentary democracy – declared DAHR’s MEPs in their letter.
