Csaba Sógor: by building the Transylvanian Carpathian Society we are building Transylvania

2013-05-11

Remembering the beginnings of the organisation founded in 1891, the Transylvanian Carpathian Society (Erdélyi Kárpát Egyesület - EKE)  celebrated the fifth EKE days between the 10th and the 12th of May. The celebrations were held in the EKE building and so-caled “fortress” from Moldovenești, Cluj County.

The “fortress” was handed over and inaugurated on this occasion. Also invited to the event was DAHR MEP Csaba Sógor, who praised in his speech the activity of the organisation on Saturday, the 11th of May.

“This is a special celebration for us. After a long wait we are now able to hand over the keys to this fortress, an addition to our existing bastions” – said László Dezső, president of the Transylvanian Carpathian Society, adding: “We must not let this key rust. We must pass it on from hand to hand, from generation to generation”.

MEP Csaba Sógor expressed his appreciation about the activities of one of the oldest Transylvanian NGOs. ‚‚We all know today how important the NGOs are in a society. European integration could never have happened without civil cooperation’’, said the MEP. He pointed out that the Transylvanian Carpathian Society, with its more than 15 member organisations, sets an excellent example by playing an important role in the awareness raising on and conservation of the Transylvanian natural and built heritage, the building of camp sites, the education of youth in ecological subjects, the support of eco-tourism, the development of physical and mental health and team spirit and the preservation of traditions. “The inauguration of the EKE fortress is an important moment in the organisation’s history, because by investing in the renewal of the building, it’s facilities and its garden we are investing in the future of Transylvania” – added the MEP, who has rewarded two of the participants of the Saturday auction with study trips to Brussels.

The members of the country’s largest tourist organisation were actively celebrating the EKE days. On Saturday the volunteers planted trees in Moldovenești and Vãlenii de Arieș and cleaned the streambed of the creek; on Sunday they organised a tour of the surroundings and collected the litter left at the EKE building.
